Brescia Slips Past Red Wolves in Final Seconds
OWENSBORO, Ky. – Colt Meyer scored a game-high 38 points and Ibra Athie chipped in 17 points and seven rebounds but the Red Wolves couldn't get passed the hot-shooting Bearcats as they fell 96-91 Saturday.
Brescia shot 59.6 percent from the floor and took 34 free-throw attempts. The Red Wolves were 32-of-72 from the floor.
Billups started off the scoring for both teams with a trey for a 3-0 Red Wolf lead. Athie made a tip-in for a 5-4 lead but the Bearcats would regain the lead. They would lead for most of the half and took a 53-50 lead into the halftime break.
Brescia opened up the second half with four-straight points. They would lead until Meyer's and-1 basket made the score 89-87 in favor of the Red Wolves with 3:42 remaining in the game. Meyer, again, helped regain the lead for the Red Wolves with a jumper with 1:57 remaining for a 91-89 lead. Athie's layup with 1:26 increased their lead to 93-90 with 1:26 to go.
The Bearcats tied the score shortly after with a triple. A foul from the Red Wolves sent Mark Cooper to the line for two shots. Cooper made one to give IUE a chance to win. With 15 seconds remaining, Athie's triple was off the mark. But he was able to grab his own rebound and pass it to Jake Johnson for the chance to win it for the Red Wolves but his shot was also off the mark. Brescia added two free throws with a second remaining to clinch the RSC battle.
The Red Wolves will play Crowley's Ridge on Friday Dec. 22 at 4 p.m. The game will be played at Oakland City.
