Track & Field: Weekend Preview

RICHMOND, Ind. - The Indiana University East outdoor track and field squads travel to Kentucky this weekend for the Margaret Simmons Invitational at Murray State University on March 24-25.

The two-day affair on the Marshall Gage Track gets underway on Friday with the women's heptathlon at 1 p.m. (All times at IU East). The men's decathlon is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the remaining portion of the heptathlon is at 9 a.m. The decathlon is at 10:30 a.m.

Field events begin at 11 a.m. After the Murray State women's team celebrates Senior Day, the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase is the first race on the track at noon.

FOLLOW THE MEET

This event has teams from the NAIA and NCAA. Murray State has a NCAA Div. I women's program.

The Marshall Gage Track is located inside Stewart Stadium on Gilbert Graves Dr., Murray, KY 42071.

Hamilton Field is the site of the Discus, Hammer and Javelin. It is located on the corner of Hamilton Ave. and N. 17th St. The Shot Put is at Stewart Stadium. Buses to Hamilton Field will be available for athletes and coaches, but not for fans.

Results will be available at midsouthracetiming.

YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

* This is the second outdoor meet of the season as the Red Wolves competed in the Blizzard Buster at Miami University last weekend.

* Ty'Shaun Williams set an IU East school and freshman record in the discus (45.40 meters) and a new freshman standard in the shot put (14.70 meters). Both marks are currently the best in the River States Conference.

* Three women established new records in their events. Vanessa Temple (school-freshman, pole vault), Izzy King (freshman, javelin) and Mimi Perkins (freshman, hammer).
