Track & Field: Margaret Simmons Invitational Day 2 Recap
MURRAY, Ky. - The Indiana University East outdoor track and field teams had three champions as the Red Wolves finished day two of the Margaret Simmons Invitational at Murray State University on March 25.
Rex Kirchenstien, Kyler Shultz and Ty'Shaun Williams each won an event to lead IU East to a second-place finish out of 12 men's squads.
"We made a lot of progress from week one to week two," IU East coach Chris Buckler said. "I'm proud of our performances through some adversity and we're looking forward to the next couple of weeks."
IU East's men scored 90 points and finished behind the University of Tennessee-Martin's 109, while the women finished in 12th place out of 15 teams.
Kirchenstien took the decathlon with 5,409 points.
Shultz had a throw of 43.01 meters to claim the title in the javelin. Shultz was third in the hammer at 44.80 meters. He was also seventh in the shot put with 12.65 meters.
In the shot put, Williams' distance of 14.57 meters gave him the victory. Williams was second in the discus with a throw of 46.65 meters. He added a fourth-place finish in the hammer with a toss of 44.15 meters.
Others to score for the men were Richard Bower (second, steeplechase, 10:38.57), Mylan Nocton (third, 5,000, 15:23.58), Tristan Thomas (fourth, long jump, 6.22 meters), Tucker Burris (fifth, 5,000, 15:48.47), Erick Gallardo Cortes (fourth, 800, 2:02.90), AJ Ludwig (fifth, 800, 2:02.96), DeAndre Hall (sixth, 800, 2:03.86), Layne Beard (seventh, hammer, 35.27 meters and eighth, Javelin, 27.93) and Teagen Rodriguez (eighth, 1,500, 4:08.28).
Scoring for the women's squad were Reanna Stinson (fourth, high jump, 1.50 meters), Brooke Sudhoff (sixth, pole vault, 2.85 meters), Mimi Perkins (sixth, hammer, 37.80 meters), Rikki Phenis (seventh, javelin, 23.07 meters), Izzy King (eighth, javelin, 21.13 meters), Caitlin Gilland (eighth, hammer, 37.53 meters) and Vanessa Temple (eighth, heptahlon, 2,806 points).
Next up for IU East is another southern trip as the Red Wolves compete in the Hilltopper Relays at Western Kentucky on March 31-April 1.
