Track & Field: Weekend Day 2 Recap
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. and Tiffin, Ohio - Several new school records were established as the Indiana University East track and field squads participated at two different events on Friday, April 14.
Rex Kirchenstien, Tucker Burris, Teagen Rodriguez and Richard Bower all put their names in the record book.
In the Gibson Invitational at Indiana State University, Kirchenstien added to his new mark of 5,629 points in the Decathlon by reaching the NAIA National Qualifying Standard of 5,600 points as he finished 11th overall. He also surpassed another record in the Javelin with a distance of 46.35 meters during the Decathlon.
Kyler Shultz finished 11th in the Javelin competition that wasn't part of the Decathlon with a toss of 45.16 meters, which was also better than the old school standard.
Other finishers in the top eight in the women's Javelin at Indiana State were Rikki Phenis (fourth, 24.55 meters) and Madelynn Ward (fifth, 22.56 meters).
Rodriguez, Bower and Burris along with other IU East distance runners were at the Tiffin University Track Carnival with the running events at Heidelberg University.
Burris won the 10,000-meter run with a school record time of 31:38.68. Mylan Nocton (second, 31:48.92) and Kyle Stanley (ninth, 33:19.22) also beat the old record.
With a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Bower was as he established a new mark with a time of 10:10.67.
Rodriguez was 16th in the 1,500-meter championship race with a time of 4:01.89. In the other 1,500-meter race, Wyatt Beck was second in 4:10.28 as Cameron Nocton was fourth in 4:11.19. Both runners bested the old record before Rodriguez passed the duo later in the meet.
IU East finishes its weekend at the Cherry Blossom Invitational at Ohio University on Saturday, April 15. The field events are at 10 a.m., while the track activity is at 11 a.m.
