Women's Golf: Red Wolves Win IU East Spring Invitational

RICHMOND, Ind. - The Indiana University East women's golf team was just one shot better at the Forest Hills Country Club on Saturday, April 15.

The Red Wolves finished with a team score of 343-346-689 to edge IU Kokomo's effort of 343-347-690 in the two-day IU East Spring Invitational. Oakland City University, the leader after the opening round, fell third place with a 337-361-698. Brescia University was fourth at 352-354-706.

"I'm very happy for this team, especially Brooklynn Cromwell," IU East coach Billy Mullin said. "This team deserves success. They have worked so hard this season and have had some curveballs thrown at them."

Cromwell was the medalist as she followed her opening round with the same score on the second day for a total of 79-79-158.

"She is a very deserving medalist," Mullin said. "She is as competitive, tough and hard-working player as we have ever had here on the team here at IU East."

Playing the final round with IU Kokomo's Brandi Jones, who was the medalist at last year's River States Conference Championships. Jones was second with an 83-80-163.

"We had another beautiful day to play today," Cromwell said. "I'm very excited that I got the first individual win of my career and that we won as a team."

"Everything was together for the most part today with my golf swing, which was great," Cromwell continued. "Although I had trouble with two doubles again today, which is what is holding me back, I was able to get some strokes back with my eagle on the back nine. The cause of both were approach shots which is something I will be working on the next week."

Joining Cromwell on the all-tournament team was Annie Gillock, who carded an 84-86-170 to finish fifth.

The other scores for the Red Wolves were Katie Craig (T8th, 89-87-176), Jalyn Bruns (T17th, 91-97-188) and Josalyn Lewis (19th, 95-94-189).

"I'm proud of the team for finishing and placing first at our last home tournament," Cromwell said. "I believe winning this tournament has helped the team by getting our mind as mentally ready as we can for next week."

Next up for the Red Wolves is trying to defend their title from a year ago at the RSC Championships at Belterra Resort on April 23-25.

"This team has what it takes," Cromwell said. "We just have to put it all together. Next week is always the biggest week of the semester with schoolwork and with the conference. I'm looking forward to seeing the team play well and looking to shoot low."
