Women's Golf: RSC Championships Day 2 Recap
DANIELS, W. Va. - Two days down and one to go.
The Indiana University East women's golf team widened its lead on the second day of the River States Conference Championships at The Resort at Glade Springs on Monday, April 22.
The Red Wolves now have a team score of 327-332-659 heading into Tuesday's final round. Winner of the last two titles, IU East is one round from taking a third straight crown earning a ticket to the NAIA National Championships on May 14-17. That event is at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.
"We've got an opportunity tomorrow, but we are going to need all hands on deck to close this out," IU East coach Billy Mullin said.
Midway University remained in second place with a 328-339-667 as St. Mary-of-the-Woods College is third at 336-344-680.
IU East's Brooklynn Cromwell also maintained the top spot on the individual leaderboard as she carded a 78 for the second round in a row.
"It was a sunny and breezy day on the course today with the greens being a little bit faster," said Cromwell, who is at 78-78-156. "Tomorrow is a new 18. I played a solid first nine, but had to scramble on the back. I had a few bad shots that put me in the trees, so my only choice was to hit some knock down shots to try and get out and up and down. I only had 27 putts, so my putter definitely saved me on a couple holes."
IU Kokomo's Gracie Tucker is second with an 81-81-162. Liv Sanders had an 83-80-163 for IU East and is tied for third with Midway's Maryssa Phillips (81-82-163).
"We are right where we need to be going into the last day," Sanders said. "We just need to put our heads down and focus tomorrow. My putting has improved each day and hope to keep that trend going tomorrow. This has been a great experience for our team the last couple of days."
Lainey Jackson is 10th for the Red Wolves with an 85-84-169.
"It was a grind out there today, but both Brooklynn and Liv played outstanding golf," Mullin said. "Brooklynn finished really solid making pars holes 16, 17 and 18. Liv hit the ball really well. She hit eight greens in regulation on the front nine with two birdies on the back. I'm also really proud of Lainey's effort today. She really played tough."
Katie Craig is tied for 12th at 81-91-172, while Jalyn Bruns is 17th at 86-90-176.
"I'm confident that Katie and Jalyn will play better tomorrow," Mullin said.
The final 18 holes start at 10 a.m. IU East's tee times are Bruns (10:50 a.m.), Craig (11 a.m.), Jackson (11:10 a.m.), Sanders (11:20 a.m.) and Cromwell (11:30 a.m.).
"We have to remember going into tomorrow that it is just another 18 holes," Cromwell said. "I'm looking forward to everyone playing well."
