Swimm, Lepper Lead Red Wolves to Ninth Straight Win
PITTSBURGH – The IU East women's volleyball team made it nine wins in a row on Saturday as they defeated Point Park in straight sets, 25-22, 25-8, 25-22.
The win gives the Red Wolves an 18-6 overall record and a 10-1 conference mark. Jessica Swimm led with 15 kills and had six digs. Brooke Lepper was also in double figures with 10 kills and 14 digs.
Point Park led for the majority of the first set and churned out a 13-7 lead. The Red Wolves went on a 7-1 run to tie the set after a service ace from Swimm. The Red Wolves would lead the rest of the set but the Pioneers cut the deficit down to one multiple times. Swimm had another service ace with her last one coming as the 25th point in the opening set.
The Red Wolves had their way in the second set. After Point Park scored 3 straight points to make the score 9-5 in favor of the Red Wolves, IU East scored 16 of the next 19 points. Reece Shirley, Payton Schultheis had kills late in the set.
The Pioneers looked to take the third leading late, 22-21. But the Red Wolves were able to score the last four points, thanks to two Pioneer errors that clinched the set.
Shirley tallied 38 assists. Teah Barrett Matthews finished with nine kills and five blocks.
The Red Wolves will travel to IU Southeast on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
