Red Wolves Finish in Second at the SMWC Invitational
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Sophia Curry finished third and the Red Wolves posted a low 318 of the day but it wasn't enough to overcome St. Mary of the Woods in the SMWC Invitational on Saturday.
The Red Wolves finished the 2-day event with 645 strokes. SMWC finished with 636.
"We finished the tournament stronger than we started it," head coach Billy Mullin said. Really want to thank all of our spectators this weekend The support was great. Brooklynn had a strong round today. I thought Liv and Lainey played better and Sophia did a good job overcoming a slow start to make the All-Tournament Team."
Curry, who was tied for the lead after Day 1, finished three strokes behind Ranae Jaeger. Curry shot an 80 in the second round. Brooklynn Cromwell vastly improved from her first round of 85 with the day's best 76. She finished in sixth. Lainey Jackson and Liv Sanders copied each other's scores from both days finishing with 80s in the second round, good for seventh. Josalyn Lewis finished two strokes better than yesterday with an 82. Katie Craig also did better than the day before shooting an 82 as well to finish in 15th.
"My game was off the first day of the tournament which made me realize I needed to lock in and put up a better score today," Cromwell said. "I went from having six penalty shots to none today and I even managed to grab a few birdies. My chipping was on line but I couldn't get anything to drop on that. We knew as a team we were 13 strokes back and that we needed to play well today regardless of making them all up or not. Everyone managed to go lower and I'm more than proud of freshman Sophia for putting up some good scores this weekend. We are looking forward to seeing everyone next weekend at home at Forest Hills."
The Red Wolves will play in the Earlham Tournament at Forest Hills Country Club on Saturday and Sunday.
